Chhattisgarh was the region known as Dakshin Koshal, which finds mention in both the Ramayana and Mahabharata. Raipur is a city in the Raipur district of the Indian state of Chhattisgarh. It is the capital city of the state of Chhattisgarh. Raipur has been in existence since the 9th century; the old site and ruins of the fort can be seen in the southern part of the city. Raipur district is important historically and as a point of interest archaeologically. This district was once part of the Dakshina Kosala Kingdom and later considered part of the Maurya Empire. Raipur has been the capital of the Haihaya Dynasty Kalchuri kings, controlling the forts of Chhattisgarh for a considerable period. Satawahana kings ruled this part until the 2nd–3rd century.

Vivekananda Sarovar (Budha Talab), a lake which is as old as the city. A 37 feet (11 m) high statue of Swami Vivekananda stands in the lake. This statue has been added to the Limca Book of Records as the ‘largest model for a statue’. The lake has colour-light fountains.
Purkhauti Muktangan Museum, developed by the Government of Chhattisgarh, Culture Department under Ministry of Tourism. It is spread over 18 hectares exhibiting entire natural resources with existing infrastructures, industries, places of tourist’s attraction, etc. including the VISION 2020.
Dudhadhari Math is one of the oldest temples of Raipur and is devoted to Lord Rama. The name of the temple has been derived from a wise man, named Balabhadra Das. It is believed that a cow called `Surhi ‘would bathe the idol with the milk. Devotees are fascinated to see, beautifully engraved scenes of Ramayana on the walls.
Marine Drive is a walkway built right around a serene lake in the centre of the city with a beautiful view into Raipur life. Pandri cloth market is Central India’s largest cloth market with over 400 shops offering all varieties of Indian Clothing. Famous for Kosa Silk, also known as a variety of vegetarian silk as the threads are made after the worms leave the cocoon it is coarser than regular silk to touch, yet very beautiful in depicting the culture of the state of Chhattisgarh.
